Guide to Palisades / Foxhall

Battery Kemble Park in Washington DC's Palisades/Foxhall Neighborhood
Neighborhood Church in Washington DC's Palisades/Foxhall Neighborhood

Tucked away on northwest edge of the District, Palisades/ Foxhall Village is truly its own little town within the big city. A largely residential area, it is distinguished from the rest of DC by its European feel and strong sense of community.  Though it is not as busy as the downtown area, Palisades/ Foxhall still has many great eating options and is an easy trip to other, more commercial neighborhoods. With all the benefits of living in a big city without the traffic and crowded sidewalks, Palisades/ Foxhall has something to offer everyone.

Living Life on the Edge

Located to the northwest of Georgetown, Palisades/ Foxhall is on the edge of the district, bordered to the west by the Potomac River. Its landlocked boundaries are harder to define, roughly bordered by Longboro Road to the east.

Easy Access to Everywhere

Well off the beaten path of regular Washingtonians, a metro station does not serve the Palisades/Foxhall area. Perfect for commuters with cars though, the neighborhood is close to the Key Bridge, which will take you to the George Washington Parkway, I-66 and Route 50. In addition, it is a quick and easy drive to The Kennedy Center, Georgetown and Bethesda. For people without cars, a few bus lines run through the area including the D3, D5, D6 and M4.

English-Inspired in America’s Capital

The Palisades/ Foxhall neighborhood has a distinct, small-village vibe, and for good reason. The layout for Foxhall is said to be inspired by the English town of Bath, where the original designers had visited. The village gets its name from Henry Foxhall, a friend of Thomas Jefferson who owned a farmhouse in the community.

Upscale Houses with a View

Palisades is mostly residential, with tree-lined streets and not too much traffic. Many of the houses are bungalows, Cape Cods or colonials, with a smattering of modern designs here and there. Mostly consisting of single-family homes, along MacArthur Boulevard there is a selection of condos, townhomes and apartment buildings. Houses along the bluff on Potomac Ave enjoy breathtaking views of the river and Virginia riverfront, and at night the sunsets are often stunning.

Foxhall’s main feature is Tudor-style homes finished in brick, stucco and half-timbering. The sidewalks are green with trees and gardens, further contributing to the village-y vibe. Overall, houses in this area are a bit on the expensive side and residents range from young families to long-time residents.

Restaurants Bring Spice to Neighborhood

Palisades/ Foxhall is not a hugely commercial area, though The MacArthur Boulevard Commerical Corridor has a standard strip of convenience stores, pharmacies and dry cleaners. However, while the area lacks retail options, it makes up for it in a selection of high-quality restaurants.

If you’re craving seafood, Black Salt is a community favorite. Half market, half high-end restaurant, crowd favorites include the Asian-inspired black bass, sweet oysters and the decadent peanut butter crunch cake. While Black Salt does have an extensive menu, customers can also pick whatever they want from the market and have it prepared for them.

Right down the road is Makoto, a traditional Japanese restaurant. Small but upscale, the inside has a Zen-like atmosphere. Popular picks include the dried baby shrimp with soy broth and eggplant, Chilean sea bass and black cod, and the grape sorbet with a hint of grand marnier to finish up the evening.

If you’re in the mood for a more casual meal, a local go-to is Jetties, which serves a huge selection of salads and sandwiches.  And Et Voila is a great Belgian option for any time of the day, but especially brunch. Other dining options are not far, with endless choices a short trip away in Georgetown.

Small Towns Stick Together

Because Palisades/ Foxhall is a smaller area, somewhat removed from the rest of DC, the community has really come together, with a strong sense of loyalty to the area. In recent years, residents have formed the Palisades Community Fund, a grant-making committee that raises money to support local projects for schools, libraries and landscaping. In addition, the Palisades Village is a non-profit devoted to helping senior citizens maintain active lives. Palisades Village provides transportation to medical appointments, helps with grocery shopping and hosts dinner, sightseeing trips and lecture series.

Every year, the community gathers for the legendary Fourth of July Parade. Though the neighborhood is small, don’t underestimate its ability to throw an all-out celebration. Featuring bands, equestrian units, community groups and children, the night finishes up with fireworks and a concert.
