Guide to Yorktown

Yorktown Home in Arlington, VA.
Yorktown Home in Arlington, VA.

The Yorktown name is generally known as one of the top public schools in the Arlington/DC area, but it's also the name of a well-known North Arlington neighborhood. This desirable community not only guarantees access to one of the most desirable schools in the area, but also has some great features, including parks, convenience and, of course, beautiful homes.

North of Lee Highway

This North Arlington neighborhood is situated in northwest Arlington, bordering Rock Spring, Williamsburg, Leeway, Tara-Leeway Heights, Highview Park, Old Dominion, and Donaldson Run. The neighborhood is one of the larger ones in the area, with a little bit over 1,000 homes. Beginning at the corner of Lee Highway and N Jefferson Street, Yorktown continues north up N Jefferson Street, east along N Little Falls Road, then east along N Rock Spring Road, south on Old Dominion Drive, west along 26th Street N, south down N Columbus Street, then directly diagonal from 24th Road N. The community is also directly west of Washington Golf and Country Club and Marymount University.

High-End Homes and Townhomes

Homes in Yorktown are definitely on the higher end, with million dollar listings coming as a norm in the neighborhood. The houses are also on the larger side, generally with a minimum of 2500 square feet. Each home also has its own style and flair. It’s very common to see a variety of home styles, including colonials, cape cods, craftsmans, contemporaries and more. Another observation to note is that inventory is typically low in the area. Once residents secure a home in the prestigious area; they typically stay put.

In addition to some of the attractive homes in the North Arlington area, there are also a few townhomes in this sought-after neighborhood. Greenbrier Court is a group of townhomes situated in the southern end of the neighborhood in a private cul-de-sac off of Lee Highway. Even though the townhome community is located so close to a main road, it has a nice private atmosphere. The townhouses have brick exteriors, four levels of living space, and a great location within walking distance to Harris Teeter and all of the shops of Lee Harrison Shopping Center. Rixey View is a cluster of townhomes located in northeast Yorktown right across from Marymount University. This community has a total of 14 towhomes with 4 levels, 2-car garages and spacious floor plans with many totaling up to 4000 square feet.

Easy to Get To

For most of Yorktown, traveling via car is the best and most convenient option. Main access roads like Lee Highway, N Yorktown Boulevard and N Glebe Road give residents straightforward routes to popular destinations, including Washington DC, other areas of Arlington and out west to Tysons Corner, Dulles and Fairfax. Although, it’s not always necessary to get out of the neighborhood with two grocery stores, a few good eateries and lots of commercial properties along Lee Highway. In addition to simple driving routes, public transit is also available from a couple of locations in the neighborhood. The Rosslyn Metro Station is about a 10-15 minute drive from most areas of Yorktown. This metro hub is serviced by the orange, blue and silver lines and brings passengers into Washington DC, out to Tyson’s Corner, Reston, Pentagon City and Ronald Reagan Airport. Residents can drive to the metro or take the 3A Metrobus line, which runs from Annandale to Rosslyn.

Entertainment Nearby

As far as dining and entertainment options, Yorktown is easily within each of the most popular spots in and around Arlington. For dining, there is a good amount of local spots close or in the neighborhood, including Elevation Burger, Pie-Tanza, and District Taco. Clarendon, Rosslyn and Ballston are also close by, which all have an abundance of restaurant, shopping and nightlife options. The great thing about Arlington is that Washington DC is also easily within reach. Georgetown is just about a 15-minute drive away from the neighborhood, and has some of the best restaurants and shopping in the city. The nightlife isn’t so bad either!

Lots of Recreation

Arlington’s parks are one of the most appealing parts of the Northern Virginia town. In Yorktown, there are a couple of awesome parks perfect for recreation. Greenbrier and Chestnut Hills Park are located close to Yorktown High School, and have lots of recreation opportunities. Greenbrier Park has 18 acres of space, a basketball court, baseball fields, a multiuse field and is home to the Yorktown Patriots. Chestnut Hills Park is connected to Greenbrier and has three acres of space, a playground and a community garden.

An Ideal North Arlington Neighborhood

The low turnover of residents should clue potential buyers in on how great the neighborhood of Yorktown truly is. With lots of parks, beautiful homes and a community atmosphere, this Arlington neighborhood is a gem often sought out by many potential buyers in the area, and it’s very easy to see why.

Duck Donuts

Duck Donuts is one of the Lee Highway corridor's newest hot spots. It opened in October of 2015, and serves these delectable donuts most Arlingtonians have been indulging in for years while vacationing on North Carolina's Outer Banks. There is sure to be a line there early Saturday mornings, but it is worth the wait. These fresh basked custom donuts are out of this world.
