History of Courthouse, VA
Courthouse dates back to the late 18th century when it was initially included in the borders for DC. In 1846 Congress passed legislation that gave up DC’s rights to the land they had previously owned south of the Potomac River including Arlington and Alexandria. There was a notable fort constructed during the Civil War that stood where the Courthouse building stands now. Fort Woodbury was named after Major D.P. Woodbury who oversaw the fort in an effort to protect DC from the Confederates. Growth occurred steadily over the next several decades, especially with the influx of workers and residents during and after the World Wars. Built in the 1930s, Colonial Village was one of the first large scale housing developments and remains popular to this day. The Courthouse neighborhood benefited tremendously from the building of the Metro, which conveniently runs directly through the neighborhood.
